The following is a reflection on the character of Jig in the short story "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway.
She had everything when she was growing up -- always the prettiest girl in her class, always the best dressed, always going on expensive vacations with her parents. Yet she envied her friends whose families seemed so warm and loving. Her own parents were cold and unloving. She was always lonely and sad. She met John when she was in her second year of college. He was older, very good looking, rich and sophisticated. Best of all, he was warm and affectionate. In his kiss she found all the love and affection she had missed in life. When he asked her to go to Europe with him, whe didn't hesitate for a moment. She loved defying her parents and their angry protests. Europe was like a dream -- carefree days in the sunny countryside, passionate nights in one hotel after another. But ehn, suddenly, the carefree dream came to an end.
